September 2-3... We came close to canceling our performances at the Smoky Mountain Folk Festival due to the huricane in the Gulf of Mexico.  Ben and I performed Friday night with Michael Gabriel, Mathew Cross, and Greg Drum.  The rest of the family came up on Saturday.  On Friday night, David Holt gave what I think was the best performance I have ever seen him give.  Maybe it was because of the circumstances, but it seemed to me that all the artists present were really giving their very best.  I especially enjoyed performances by Mack Snodderly, and the Trantham Family.  Emily Trantham has just recorded a new CD that features her matchless voice.  We celebrated Lorien's fourth birthday on Saturday.  A Methodist conference meeting prevented us using our normal party spot in the Terrace Inn, but we discovered that an outdoor party by the lake was just as nice!

September 10... We really enjoyed the singing in the Belk Building of Centenary UMC.  Grandma Cockman was staying with Caroline, so she came along with us.  The building was beautifully decorated with dozens of flower pots.  Singing with us was a great gospel trio, Joyful Heart.  And we got a visit from the Edwards Family!

September 11... Grandma Cockman also came with us to Epworth UMC in Concord.  In attendance were Ruby Sipes, Shirley James, Bernard "Nardy" Mauldin and Anne Kepley, members of the family that we sing about in our song, "Angels Unaware".  We dedicated the song to them, then had the pleasure of meeting them after the concert.

September 17... We sang at the Catawba Country Club for a Lutheran Layman's League (LLL) seminar, sponsored by the Concordia Theological Seminary.  The guest speaker was Dr. David Ludwig, Chair of the Psychology department of Lenoir-Rhyne College.  They fed our entire family (all eighteen of us!) a terrific meal prepared and served by the country club.

September 18... I didn't realize it had been so long since we had sung at Concord, which is just a few miles from our home in Sherrill's Ford.  Grandpa Cockman came to preache at Concord and Hopewell churches around forty years ago, when Daddy first met Mamma (playing the piano).  Sunday was the church's homecoming, and there were many people present who had Grandpa for their pastor.  After the service, we were treated to a wonderful homecoming dinner in the fellowship hall!

September 24-25... As advertised, there was molasses making, bee keeping, petting zoo, farrier, gold panning, Civil War re-enactors, apple cider making, quilting, blacksmith, steam engines, old cars, boy scouts, butter & apple butter making, craftsmen, local potters, woodcarvers and tasty treats. (http://www.catawbahistory.org/festivals.htm)  We also had some great music down at the mill.  All my pictures didn't turn out, but click the links for photos of New River Gospel, Lee Ward and Southern Express, Biggerstaff Bluegrass, Cockman Brothers and Friends and The Gospel Voices.  The weather was beautiful, and the festival was a great success!  Thanks to Paul Beatty, Ken Hildebran and all the employees and volunteers of the Historical Society, as well as the corporate sponsors who made this event possible.
