September 3-4... Friday and Saturday nights we performed for the Smoky Mountain Folk Festival at Stuart Auditorium, Lake Junaluska Assembly.  the weather was beautiful all weekend, and we really felt bad for the folks in Florida getting slammed by hurricane Frances.  Joe Sam Queen was the MC, and there were lots of amazing musicians, singers and dancers.  I especially enjoyed listening to Mac Snodderly on the fiddle, and jamming with Harper Van Hoy on the balcony.  We stayed in the terrace inn, where a Christian Singles seminar was taking place.  A highlight was picking with Ron Dickerson, who asked us to play for one of the meetings.

September 10... We were honored to sing to benefit the Reep family at Mount Pleasant UMC.  Cindy Reep is a cancer patient, and desires your prayers.  Amy Vaughan organized the concert.  Before the singing, there was BBQ chicken in the fellowship hall.  We were inspired by Cindy's courageous testimony, and by the support she has received from the Church.

September 11... Principal Joe Biggerstaff and Biggerstaff Bluegrass put on a benefit at Banoak Elementary School Gym to raise money for the school.  We enjoyed the group, who will be with us at Murray's Mill at the end of the month.  A real treat was some great flounder from a nearby fish restaurant.  And being at an elementary school, of course the kids enjoyed the nice playground!

September 12... After years of research, we have conclusively documented Wesleyan homecomings equate to awesome food and fellowship.  First Wesleyan in Kannapolis was certainly no aberration, and we were happy to see our old friend Rev. Forbis Kivett.  Thanks to Mark Owensby for the pictures.

September 12... Sunday, we sang for the first night of the annual Baptist Tent Revival.  Rev. McCrackin and Centerview Baptist Church were the hosts this year, and the special speaker was Rev. Steve Freeman from Richmond, VA.  Pastor Freeman has overcome multiple physical disadvantages to become an inspirational evangelist.

September 18... Saturday night we sang at Woodlawn Baptist Church in Charlotte.  Our cousin Earl Pennell is the pastor, and we had sung at his previous church near Lincolnton.  Isaac and Seth Barker came to the concert, and so did Matthew and Andrew Cross.  After we packed up, we had a contest to see who could jump to the highest step in front of the church.

September 19... Sunday morning, Harwells from all over the place converged on Center United Methodist Church in Catawba.  Grandma Gabriel is a Harwell, and we always sing for the morning service.  After the service, we all get together in the fellowship hall for some good food!

September 19... Sunday night we were back in Kannapolis, this time at Beth Page Methodist.  Paster Randy Foster invited us early for a potato and chili dinner.  The place was packed, and we had a really fun time.  The church has grown a lot since we first sang here, and the additions are very nice.

September 19... Friday night we were at a very special birthday party for Jenny Berg.  Here husband Don hosted the party, which also doubled as a benefit singing with the Cockman Family.  Before the singing, there was a tremendous meal, with one of the best salads I think I have ever had.  Happy Birthday, Jenny!

September 25-26... The weather was perfect for the Murray's Mill Fall Festival.  We enjoyed the music, food and exhibits.  There was a loud Civil War reenactment each day.  The most interesting part was the Army Surgeon's tent, where the doctor/historian performed amputations on mannequins and lectured on 19th century medicine.  The highlight for me was riding around with Grandpa Gabriel on a golf cart for an hour on Sunday.   Saturday afternoon, Ben appeared on stage with excellent bluegrass gospel group, Fireproof.  Later that night, I made a cameo at the Andy Griffith Playhouse in Mount Airy, where I got to play with Doug Dillard, and meet Betty Lynn (Thelma Lou from The Andy Griffith Show) and James Best (Roscoe P. Coltrane from The Dukes of Hazard).
