July 3... We love to be in cool Blowing Rock in the middle of summer, but we are starting to wish we could get some good weather.  We got rained on for the second year in a row, but fortunately it held off until the end of the concert.  The Cockman kids continued their tradition of riding wagons in the wonderful Blowing Rock Parade, and they were joined by Maggie Hooks and the Harrelson children.  We had a fun time, but I got pretty frustrated with how my fiddle strings kept loosening in the damp air.

July 4... Sunday morning we sang at Faith Wesleyan Church, where Grandma Cockman attends with Uncle Darl and Aunt Mary.  It was also the last Sunday for Pastor David Crawford, who is moving on after three years.  Our sympathies and prayers go out to Mrs. Crawford, whose brother passed away over the weekend.  After the concert and meal, we went to the Bur-Mill club to sing for our cousin Sherry Alloway's birthday party and political campaign.

July 9... The Doc Watson Music Festival was kind enough to allow us to play on Friday evening this year, and we had a great time.  We are always glad to be able to hear the impeccable musicianship of the Kruger Brothers, and it was a special treat for me to hear Blue Ridge Piano Man Jeff Little for the first time.  Also there was our (distant) cousin Jonathan Maness with his band "Amantha Mill".  Although Doc couldn't make it on Friday evening, we still got to hear a lot of his music in the Doc Watson tributes by the Krugers and the late jam.

July 10... Saturday we were honored to sing for the 60th Wedding Anniversary Celebration for Rev. and Mrs. McNeil, at the Lake Norman home of our friends Doug and Michelle McNeil.  We enjoyed meeting the McNeil family and relaxing by the lake.  The girls really loved the southern meal of fried chicken, potato salad, macaroni and cheese, fried green tomatoes, and lemonade.  Happy Anniversary!

July 11... We were so glad that the weather was pleasant on Sunday during our concert at Fred's Mercantile in Beech Mountain, the highest town in eastern America.  The past few years have been rainy, but today was beautiful.  We always love to shop around Fred's general supply store.  Fred was also generous enough to treat us all to dinner in his downstairs deli.  We felt like the crowd was the best we had ever seen, and we saw lots of folks that we recognized from the Cove Creek Festival.

July 17... It was an honor to play once again with George Hamilton IV this weekend at First United Methodist of Gastonia.  George is a fantastic singer, and one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.  We also enjoyed spending some time with Scott Whitener and the Happy Tones.  The singing and BBQ was a fundraiser for the restoration of the historic Landers Chapel School.  Landers UMC hopes to use the old schoolhouse in the near future.  Thanks to Cindy Gibson for the photos.

July 25... We were part of First Baptist's 175th Annual Concert Series.  It was a "Sacred Folk Jubillee", along with celebrated Celtic Harpist William Jackson.  We were delighted to see our friends Bev and Carlene Shea, and Maury Scobee.  We appreciate your prayers for Mr. Shea, as he is recovering from a recent heart attack.  He is my favorite singer, and a wonderful person.  God has blessed him with an amazing life and gift.

July 31... This was the first time in three years that we've been to the Shindig.  This was the last Shindig of the summer before the Heritage Folk Festival next Saturday evening.  We really wanted to make it, since we wanted our kids to play on the stage, and there are rumors that it may not be held next year due to construction on the green.  Sorry no pictures, as if there were not enough for this month already!  :}
