September 5... The last time we sang at the Mountain State Fair was the evening of September 11, 2001, just after we had learned that the Trade Center Towers had fallen.  We sang Saturday on the same stage, and it really brought the memories back.  The concert was filmed by TV-16 out of Greenville, SC, and featured several good area bluegrass-gospel groups.

September 7... It was nice to be back in some cooler weather in Linville, NC.  Pastor Bud Parker welcomed us to Faith Baptist Church for their 33rd homecoming.  The singing was good and the preaching was better, and the outdoor meal after the service really topped it off.  You really need to come with us to a mountain homecoming with dinner on the grounds.

September 12... Earlene Hicks is once again promoting a concert to benefit a local law enforcement agency, this time in Valdese, NC.  The concert, which featured the music of the Cockman Family, the Southerners Quartet, and Change of Heart, benefited the Burke County / Morganton Crime Stoppers Association.  My friend Dr. Larry Young came along with me, and we learned a lot about the Italian Waldensians, the early protestants who founded settled in the area.  We even lost at a game of Bocce (Italian ball game) at the Waldensian Presbyterian Church.

September 13... If you didn't like the genre, it changed every ten minutes at the Tosco Music Party.  This was the first time we played in the beautiful old church auditorium in Spirit Square.  The music ranged from Bluegrass to pop to ragtime to western swing (etc.), and we made several new friends.  John's children make up the band "justincase", who also performed at the party.

September 14... Sunday morning we sang at the Wesleyan Church Homecoming in the beautiful town of Canton, NC.  Pastor Penland has been at this charge for fifteen months, but we have known him for a long time.  After the service we were invited to a nearby for fellowship and a meal.

September 14... Each year, nine Maiden-area Baptist churches gather for a week-long tent revival.  This year the services were hosted by Lawings Chapel.  Dwayne Burke was in charge of special singing and once again we were treated to a sermon by Rev. Kenneth Ridings, president of Fruitland Bible College near Hendersonville, NC.  We sang for forty-five minutes to start the meeting, which lasts from Sunday to Thursday night.

September 21... We had some family with us at Covenant Baptist Church Sunday morning.  Grandma Cockman came with Aunt Sarah Myers, and Aunt Maggie and Uncle Dwain Kitchel.  They were attending Crystal and Daniel's wedding the night before, and left after the singing to be at the Gurly reunion in Davidson for lunch.  After the singing and preaching, the sanctuary was quickly converted back into a fellowship hall for a wonderful pot-luck meal.

September 21... Saturday night we were at Newfound Baptist Church north of Asheville, NC.  The church was providing free BBQ, and the community took them up on the offer.  A shuttle bus ran from the parking lot up the hill to the pavilion, which sported a fantastic view of the neighboring mountains.  After we ate, the boys and I played instrumentals for half an hour until the line had subsided, then we gave a full concert.  Along with many other friends we recognized, we were glad to see the Williams family and we dedicated In The Secret Of His Presence to the memory of their son Jed Williams.  Thanks to Kenneth Deese for the pictures!

September 27... The scenery was breathtaking as usual, and we enjoyed our visit to Lake Lure for the Meet HIM at the Lake concert.  We were the only Bluegrass band featured at this contemporary and rock gospel concert.  There was plenty of BBQ for the musicians and  volunteers, it was neat to be chauffeured around the lake in vans and golf carts.

September 28-29... The 19th Annual Murray's Mill Harvest Festival was a great success.  The weather was good both days.  There was molasses making, bee keeping, petting zoo, farrier, gold panning, Civil War re-enactors, apple cider making, quilting, blacksmith, steam engines, butter & apple butter making, craftsmen, local potters and woodcarvers.  Both days we hosted Bluegrass and Gospel music at the mill.
