August 7... Much like playing on Beech Mountain, we're getting used to being rained upon in Black Mountain. I think we've never been here that it didn't rain on us at one point. Last year the fire marshal frowned on so many people in the Lake Tomahawk club house, so this year we put the sound system in the covered picnic area where we sang a few years ago. We were pleased to see our friend Laura Boosinger, who we last saw performing with David Holt at the Doc Watson music fest. Emcee and Dance Leader Glen Bannerman was there as well. We missed Glen last week when the Christmas Special caused us to miss the Mountain Folk and Dance Festival in Asheville. |

August 8-9... The Missionary Camp Meeting last from Tuesday to Saturday morning. Various missionary brothers spoke in the mornings, and pastor Ed Byskal of Cloverdale Bibleway in Vancouver, BC preached in the evenings. Dan Daisley of Bible Tabernacle in Ruth welcomed were more than eighty visiting ministers from all over the world, each presenting needs from Bibles to Church expansion. We sang "Father Forgive" and "Amazing Grace" Friday night before an incredible message by Ed Byskal. Saturday morning, local church members and visitors who don't have too far to drive stayed for an AM concert and covered dish dinner. There was singing by the Cockmans, the Younce Brothers, the Miller Sisters, and several solos. After the concert, brother Dan announced that over 120,000 dollars had been raised, all going to overseas missions.

August 14... This was our first time to sing on a Thursday night at Balls Creek Camp Meeting. The annual Methodist camp meeting was established in 1853, a time when there were no area resident ministers and farmsteads were much farther apart. For two weeks in August, Catawba County residents meet here for preaching and fellowship. A wooden arbor stands in the center of the camp, with a bell to notify campers of service times and curfew. Due to the popularity of the camp meeting, many campers have built permanent wooden cabins which encircle the old wooden arbor four or more rows deep and are passed down to generation after generation of family members. |

August 21... We underestimated Charlotte traffic and arrived a little late, but we still had a great time at Second Baptist in Lancaster. The occasion was a sports banquet sponsored by the Church, complete with door prizes donated by local sporting goods stores, a merchant's expo, and a visiting speaker who challenged the sportsmen with a message about the Guide. Billy, David, Ben and myself played some instrumental music during the meal, then two songs just before the speaker. |

August 22... The Cockman Family sang Friday night at the Living Word Tabernacle annual camp meeting at King's Mountain Park in South Carolina. It was hot and rainy, but the fellowship and preaching were worth the trouble. The guest speaker was Brother Homer Longoria from Alabama. |

August 29-30... This marks about the 12th or 13th year in a row that we've been coming to the Smoky Mountain Folk Festival at Lake Junaluska. It was especially nice because we were sad to have missed the Asheville Mountain Folk and Dance Festival earlier this month. We celebrated Lorien's 2nd birthday Saturday at the Terrace Inn. The weather was beautiful, and we got in a lot of fun. We did the annual volleyball game and boat rides with the Isaac and Seth Barker, who come every year with their parents, fiddle-playing sisters, and grandparents Harper and Wansie Van Hoy. Billy and Isaac flipped their canoe and had to be rescued by a motorboat. After the concert Saturday night, we paid the hotel $10.00 to turn on the lights at the basketball court for an hour so we could play some ball. We stayed at the Lambeth Inn on the hill near the cross, and the view of the lake was magnificent. We are looking forward to coming back this December for a Christmas special with David Holt. |
