June 7... Carol Lineberger of Terrell Campers sponsored this meeting of campers at a beautiful lake near Salisbury, NC. This group of friends travel all over the U. S. and Canada in their campers, and have a lot of fun along the way! We brought along our cousin Emily Osborne to watch after Samuel, and enjoyed the fellowship and BBQ. |

June 8... There was a fantastic turnout in Belmont at Stowe Memorial Park. We saw many of the same people who came to unity Place last week. Lorien, who has been walking since her 8th month, had a lot of fun playing with Arwen and Samuel. Michael Gabriel and Brendon Fisher helped us unload the bus. We were almost through with the break between sets when the train came by with a loud whistle. We immediately jumped onto the stage and broke into the Orange Blossom Special. |

June 9... This was our second time at Calvary, but this time we were outside on the new ball-field. The facilities were beautiful, and we were surprised at how many people walked down the road or across the not-finished parking lot to brave the scorching heat for this concert. We were particularly thankful for Media director Derek Boggs, who stood in the sun for our entire concert to make sure we had a great sound. |

June 15... Undoubtably the most beautiful setting for a Cockman Family Concert ever. We sang next to a drop-off with a cliff face and the Chimney to our left, and Lake Lure and the Hickory Nut Gorge to our right. We were in Chimney Rock from Friday afternoon, and enjoyed camping, swimming in the creek, and eating at the Cajun Pig. John Roten or WPKE in Ashville was in Chimney Rock all day Saturday, and broadcasted live from the Old Rock Cafe until 12:00 PM. We started up as the park closed for the night, and also enjoyed the dulcimer music of John Mason and the bluegrass-gospel of Buncombe Turnpike. |

June 21... This is the second time that Fred Smith has invited us to sing for the Randolph Electric Membership Coop in Asheboro. And the second time we've eaten at my favorite fish restaurant, Pier 64. We saw lots of familiar faces, including Jennifer's Uncle Alton and Aunt Joanne Riley. They brought their granddaughter Melanie, who is the same age as Arwen, and is her first cousin. The concert was held at Southwest Middle School, and the linemen gave some fascinating demonstrations of their work and heavy equipment outside the school. |

June 22... After setting up our tent for Sunday's Singing on the Mountain in Linville, Ben and I picked up my friend Dr. Larry Young, pastor of Brookside Presbyterian in Boone, and headed down to Asheville. This was our first time at Trinity Presbyterian, but music minister Anthony Moore was waiting to help us set up. The church also provided a wonderful fried chicken supper. We always enjoy the audiences in the Asheville area; they seem to have an excellent appreciation for our style of music. |

June 23... This was our third year at the Singing on the Mountain in Linville, NC. Grandfather Mountain is the nation's only privately owned International Biosphere, and we are very appreciative of Hugh Morton for so diligently preserving this natural wonder. The singing started 78 years ago as the Hartley Family Reunion, and has featured appearances by Johnny Cash, Arthur Smith, George Beverly Shea, Roy Acuff, Oral Roberts, Bob Hope, Billy Graham, and many others. Joe Lee Hartley attended the first meeting, started by his Father, and age of ten, and he has not missed a single singing yet! Once again it was quite an experience to sing in the outdoors at the foot of the highest peak in the Blue Ridge Mountains. click

June 29... There was a surprisingly large crowd at Traditions and Bolick Pottery in Blackberry, south of Blowing Rock, NC. Sixth-generation potter Janet Calhoun had some beautiful ceramics on sale at their 11th Annual heritage Day and Kiln Opening. I especially liked Mike Calhoun's wizard-faced jugs. Along with the music were corn mill grinding, horse and wagon rides, a quilting party, chair making, blacksmithing, and a working steam engine. A highlight of the festival was Lanna Bolick and the Country Magic Cloggers. Also visit http://www.traditionspottery.com |

June 30... We were without David in our return to Catawba Heights, but our friend and neighbor Timothy Cross filled in on the bass and even gave us some great piano music! We ran into Steve Kelly earlier this month (June 8) at Stowe Memorial Park in Belmont, and he invited us back to the church. A bit of Serendipity... David Hooks sang Caroline's "I Love You, Lord" in his church Sunday morning. Afterward he was met by fellow church member David Jackson, and discovered that they were both (pictured below) friends of the Cockman Family. It turns out that they were both on stage together jamming after Caroline's wedding at Balls Creek Camp Meeting, though they didn't know each other at the time. website: http://www.catawbaheightsbaptist.com |
