September 1-2... As usual, we had a wonderful vacation at Lake Junaluska during the two-day Smoky Mountain Folk Festival.  We got reacquainted with some old friends, and had fun playing volleyball with the Barker boys and the Johnson girls.  Most of all we relaxed and enjoyed the music, jamming, and tuna salad sandwiches from the next-door grill.  We'll be back on December 9th for a "Mayberry Christmas" with George "Goober" Lindsay.

September 3... We were a little awed at Calvary Baptist in Winston-Salem.  The concert was video recorded, and everywhere we looked we saw ourselves on a huge view-screen.  But the sound was great and we really enjoyed the food that was prepared.  Plus it was nice to see the Quinns and Jessica VonCannon.

September 9... We've been going down to Kinston to sing for the Eastern North Carolina Bluegrass Association at Lenoir Community college for around twelve years now, and we seem to enjoy it more each time.  We always have a ball jamming out in the hallways and locker rooms, and we also know we'll see our friends Claude and Barbara Hill, and also Delbert and Barbara Sanderson.

September 10... It was a mixed bag today at Centenary Baptist in Clemmons, from contemporary gospel to oldies covers to beach music.  Along with the Cockmans were Sound Express, the Fantastic Shakers and many others.  Aubrey and Elizabeth Riley came and brought Jennifer and Arwen, who considerably brightened our day.

September 16... We sang on a flat-bed trailer in downtown Yadkinville for the Harvest Festival.  The Cockmans sang on the JOY FM stage, along with many other great gospel groups.  After the concert we rushed down to Marshville to sing at the Boll Weevil Festival.

September 16... We barely made it on time to the Boll Weevil festival, and Robert Poe helped us unpack the van.  The atmosphere was festive, and we sang right after the car and motorcycle show awards ceremony.  Little Wayne Haas from the Arthur Smith Show was the MC as we paid homage to the tiny critters that destroyed the cotton and helped diversify our agricultural exports.

September 17... Today was dedicated to the memory of Grandpa Cockman.  this morning we sang at Hopewell UMC, on of his last charges, and Uncle Elijah delivered a short (too short!) tribute.  Then we went to the Gurley Reunion (his mother's side), which Grandpa never missed.  All his surviving children were present at both events.

September 22... Today we were almost rained out at the 4th Annual Gilkey Community Bluegrass and Gospel Festival (whew!) in Rutherfordton, NC.  However, the die-hard crowd refused to leave, so we sang under a big tarp in the parking lot of the elementary school.  After the concert we rushed to get a few hours of sleep then fly out of Raleigh at 7:00 AM to sing in Florida.

September 23-24... Sunny Ft. Lauderdale!  It was unbelievably hot in Florida, but fortunately Coral Ridge Presbyterian was air conditioned.  We were very pleased to be able to meet and speak with Dr. D. James Kennedy, a nationally known evangelist and political activist.  We were greeted and escorted by church director Cal Longacre and goodman Pedro, the Godly janitor who drove us around in the van and regaled us with his fascinating life story.  We sang Saturday night for a church-wide supper, the Sunday morning for all three services.  Then Sunday afternoon it was back to North Carolina!
