July 1... It is so nice to sing in the park at Blowing Rock, NC, in July.  The mountains were beautiful, the temperature was cool, and I only have to travel four miles to get there!  For the tenth consecutive year, we sang in the gazebo immediately following the 2:00 PM parade.  We especially enjoyed the music of "The Vagabonds" and the company of so many of our friends.

July 2... Our first trip to Birmingham was very enjoyable, despite the fact that our van was in the shop.  Daddy rented a pick-up truck for the instruments, and the boys hitched a ride down with Kenneth Deese.  There was an incredible Sunday night audience at Briarwood.  The people were very receptive to our music and we made many new friends!

July 4... Once again we were thankful the be in the mountains for an outdoor singing in July.  At the Brushy Mountain Community Center, way back in the woods near Moravian Falls, NC, we enjoyed watching Ben win the watermelon seed spitting contest, and afterward we looked down the mountain at a panoramic view of several distant fireworks presentations.

July 9... Today we sang in the highest town in the eastern North America.  It was so nice to wear a jacket in the middle of July!  We always enjoy the outdoor singing at Fred's Mercantile.  This was the first of a summer-long series of concerts for Fred, and the crowd was great!  We hope to be back next summer for another cool relaxing day at Beech Mountain.  Check out Fred's web site!

July 15... We had a great time and saw a lot of friends at Liberty Baptist Church in Kannapolis.  The church was filled to capacity, and we had a great service.  However, I left the camera behind in the hotel!  The two pictures below are actually from Beth Page on Sunday.  Since we sang less than a mile away from Liberty Sunday morning, I just drove by after church to take the picture on the lower right.

July 16... Caroline's Birthday!  The pictures of Beth Page include the two above... We enjoyed being at Beth Page UMC again, and it seemed as if everyone knew us. Pastor Randy Foster and the congregation made us feel right at home, and we had a Spirit filled morning (even the few new songs we tried went well!)  This has really been the month for Kannapolis -- We'll be at North Kannapolis Baptist Church on July 30!

July 16... After church, we were glad to be able to see some of our relatives at the Gabriel (Mama's side) Reunion at Hopewell United Methodist Church in the suburbs of Sherrill's Ford, NC.  Today was also special because it was Caroline's Birthday!  It was also very special because we knew that Mama and Grandma would be doing some very fancy cooking... Needless to say, I didn't eat breakfast!

July 16... We really enjoyed our first concert at Bethel Presbyterian in Cornelius, NC.  It is the home church of our friends the Quinns.  Though it was our first time, it seemed like we knew half the people there.  Since David and Jessie were honeymooning, we asked our old friend Timothy Cross to bring his wife Faith and help us out on the electric bass.  Tim's an excellent bass player, but the audience really got a surprise when he went to the piano and played the most beautiful piano rendition of "How Great Thou Art" that I have heard.  Tim received a standing ovation!

July 30... We sang at North Kannapolis Baptist Church in Kannapolis, NC on a day that was named in honor of Audrey Pennell (pictured below).  It was Audrey's ninetieth birthday, and afterward the church gave her a big party in the fellowship hall.  Jessie and David Cockman dropped in on the way back from their honeymoon.  It's so nice to have all the family together again!
